Viper Innovation’s latest technology offering, CableGuardian, has been demonstrated to senior personnel and decision makers from the UK’s rail infrastructure sector.
In total 23 visitors attended the demonstration at Viper Innovation’s headquarters in Portishead, Bristol. The demonstration illustrated the full capabilities and benefits of CableGuardian, which is the first platform to offer proactive monitoring, detection and location of both cable insulation and conductor faults on live signalling power distribution systems.
“We were delighted with the attendance and the response to CableGuardian,” explained Managing Director Neil Douglas. “Visitors reported that it was one of the best supplier technology demonstrations they had been to, and asset management teams were hugely excited by the electrical integrity information that the technology could provide them with.
“As the UK rail network undergoes widespread expansion and upgrading, CableGuardian is the right product at the right time. Innovative technologies are needed to help usher in a new era of proactive asset management which will ultimately mean fewer train delays.”
Across the rail industry, cable failures can be experienced due to a number of reasons ranging from cable ageing through to vermin damage, vandalism and theft. The consequences of cable failures can be significant in terms of repair costs and signalling failures, with the resulting disruption to train services affecting both the train operators and the public.
The CableGuardian demonstration showed how a complex power distribution network could be monitored remotely, with the proprietary sensing technology and analytics enabling warnings and status information to be automatically enunciated or remotely accessed by stakeholders.
The cable insulation resistance monitoring technology within CableGuardian was developed for the demanding subsea oil and gas industry where it is proven at successful installations around the world. CableGuardian integrates Viper’s proven technology and LiveWire Innovation’s copper conductor integrity monitoring known as Spread-Spectrum Time Domain Reflectometry (SSTDR). The combination of these technologies provides a unique capability for monitoring live electrical cables and for locating any degradation or failure.
CableGuardian will be demonstrated to a wider audience at Railtex in May, but the technology day gave an advanced overview of how this state-of-the-art technology, developed for the subsea oil and gas industry, can add great value to many other industries, including rail.
