Around the age of 13. I always enjoyed maths and science at school and I was lucky to be presented with an opportunity to attend additional lessons after school in computing and maths. I was also fortunate to complete my Duke of Edinburgh awards, which at the time offered a course in electronics, which I enjoyed thoroughly.
I completed a master’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
I work within the PSD (Product Service Delivery) team. I have supported Subsea for the majority of my time at Viper. Some examples of work I have participated in includes working alongside some of our Oil & Gas clients to help ensure the upkeep of their assets using action trackers, etc. I have completed studies on assets, including Condition Assessments, Risk Assessments, Vulnerability Studies, electrical fault analysis, etc. I have also worked with other internal departments and clients to support work related to using the V-LIM / V-LIFE on a 3kV system, SSTDR ( Spread Spectrum Time Domain Reflectometry) and HVPD (High Voltage Partial Discharge) coupler testing and I also edited and updated the existing Long Offset Umbilical Electrical Power Distribution Paper.
I am now transitioning more towards the CableGuardian rail product side, where I have had a hand in creating the systems on the portal, have updated the database with hardware and use the CableGuardian wizard for fault finding. I now support the maintenance of our existing systems and support the installation and commissioning of new systems. I am also looking at refining some of our processes to improve the way we work as the number of systems we manage grow. This will also involve looking at the service packages we offer.
Offer visits to schools / universities to present what we do. Talk about the benefits and challenges of working in both the Subsea and Rail industry – including opportunity to travel, good salary, being multi-skilled and capable of switching between industries, variety of work and opportunity for secondments, etc.
There was no particular age that I was interested in engineering. From a young age throughout growing up, I always found the most joy and education through practical activity and piquing my curiosity through experimenting with activities like Lego or similar. Engineering sparked my interest when I was in secondary school as it was a career that had many different branches to explore so you can keep expanding your knowledge and challenging yourself which is an aspect I love.
I’m currently undertaking an apprenticeship through Weston College, about to complete my first year. I will be in the apprenticeship for the next 3 years and hopefully will also complete my HNC (equivalent to the first year of uni). My goal is to keep progressing and qualifying until a degree.
I am an engineering technician apprentice in the hardware solutions team. My job is to manage, maintain and monitor the electrical lab from ordering consumables in, assisting in building or reworking products, investigations into a damaged or faulty product, or building from a specification from my team.
Keep attending careers evenings, going to local schools with women in engineering that can inspire young women to seek a career in STEM based on their interests at the moment to show them that engineering is an option and not to be deterred.
I’ve always been interested in how things work, and the ideas that go into solving everyday problems always amaze me. And ever since I was a kid, my dad has always been an inspiration for me to choose engineering as my career.
After finishing the tenth grade, I decided that science would be the path of my future. Following that decision, I decided to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering and a master’s degree in Control Systems. After a few years of practice, I earned a master’s degree in research for Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
I am a Jr. Research Engineer working with an incredibly competent research team focused to exploring new approaches and developing next generation products for electrical monitoring and asset integrity solutions for global sectors such as subsea and rail.
With the advancement of technology and its influence on our daily lives, the significance of science is now obvious to all. We need to bring engineering and science marvels to young females in middle and high schools to pique their interest. Through workshops and industrial trips, we need to show students how engineering is done in everyday activities and throughout the business phase. This will motivate students to pursue careers in science and engineering.
