Why collecting more data isn’t always the answer

Individual measurements appeared to show the asset recovering. However, when the readings were viewed over a longer period, the wider trend indicated underlying deterioration.

This gave Network Rail’s engineering teams the insight they needed to investigate further and identify the root cause. The affected cable was subsequently replaced during planned maintenance activities, helping to prevent a potential signalling failure.

The outcome was significant: zero passenger disruption, protection from an estimated 5,000 to 10,000 delay minutes and avoidance of up to £1 million in potential Schedule 8 penalties.

The important point is that the value came not simply from collecting the data, but from understanding the trend behind it.

Seasonal variation could have made the individual measurements difficult to interpret. Looking at the asset’s performance over time provided the additional context needed to identify a developing issue and support timely intervention.
