Jackdaw and the North Sea: Why Offshore Asset Integrity Matters

As the Jackdaw gas field moves towards production, its development highlights how new offshore facilities connect with existing infrastructure — and why maintaining the integrity of critical electrical systems matters throughout an asset’s operating life.

The approval of the Jackdaw gas field marks another milestone in the development of the UK Central North Sea. Beyond the immediate news, the project provides a useful example of how new offshore developments can connect with existing facilities — and why the reliability of critical infrastructure remains important throughout an asset’s operating life.

On 21 October 2026, the Energy Secretary agreed that the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) could grant consent for gas production at Jackdaw, operated by Adura. According to the government announcement, the project could begin supplying gas as early as the end of October.

The decision follows further environmental assessment and regulatory review, after the project’s original consent was overturned by the Scottish courts in January 2025.

Connecting new developments with existing infrastructure

Jackdaw is a high-pressure, high-temperature gas-condensate field in the Central North Sea, approximately 30 km south-east of the Shearwater platform and adjacent to the UK/Norway median line.

The development comprises an offshore wellhead platform and four wells, connected to the existing Shearwater installation by a 31 km subsea pipeline. At Shearwater, the gas will be processed before being transported onshore to St Fergus via the Fulmar Gas Line.

This connection highlights how new offshore developments rely on established infrastructure to bring production to shore. Maintaining the condition and reliability of these connected assets is an important consideration throughout their operating life.

Why electrical integrity matters offshore

Behind offshore production are complex electrical systems that support critical equipment, control functions and operational activities. Maintaining the integrity of these systems is an important part of managing asset reliability.
Subsea power and control cables operate in challenging environments. Over time, insulation degradation and water ingress can affect electrical condition, potentially leading to faults, loss of functionality and costly intervention.
The challenge is that deterioration may develop before a cable failure becomes apparent. Without appropriate visibility of electrical condition, you may have limited information to help assess emerging issues and plan your response.
From our experience working with subsea electrical systems, understanding changes in cable condition before they develop into failures is an important part of effective asset integrity management. Ongoing monitoring provides insight into electrical condition, helping operators identify changes, assess risks and make more informed decisions about when intervention may be necessary.
This is particularly relevant in offshore environments, where intervention can require specialist vessels, personnel and careful coordination with operational schedules.

Protecting critical assets throughout their operating life

As offshore developments connect new facilities with established infrastructure, maintaining visibility of electrical asset health remains an important consideration.

Electrical integrity management is not limited to responding when a fault occurs. Having the right protection and monitoring in place helps operators understand cable condition, identify emerging issues and make informed decisions throughout an asset’s operating life. This is where Intelligence Installed can make a practical difference — combining insight with protection to help operators stay ahead of risk.

At Viper Innovations, we specialise in intelligent electrical integrity solutions for subsea and other critical cable applications. Our technologies address different aspects of electrical integrity management: V-LIFE provides active passivation to protect cable insulation against degradation associated with water ingress, while V-LIM supports ongoing monitoring of insulation resistance, helping operators understand changes in electrical condition.

By combining cable protection with ongoing monitoring, we help you take a more informed approach to electrical integrity management, reducing uncertainty around your critical assets and supporting decisions throughout their operating life.

Supporting reliable offshore operations

The Jackdaw development highlights the engineering and infrastructure that underpin offshore production. As the North Sea continues to evolve, maintaining electrical integrity remains an important part of reliable offshore operations.

Having the right protection and monitoring in place gives operators greater insight into the condition of critical cable systems, helping them make informed decisions and manage risk throughout an asset’s operating life. It’s a practical example of Intelligence Installed — combining insight with protection to help operators stay ahead of risk.
