No Surprises at Restart: 174 Days of Subsea Electrical Protection and Monitoring

174 days of autonomous subsea electrical monitoring

When an offshore operator planned an extended FPSO off-station period, it needed to maintain visibility of subsea electrical condition across eight control channels. The objective was to reduce uncertainty and support confident recommissioning when the FPSO returned to service.

Viper deployed an autonomous solution combining V-LIFE passivation technology to protect cable insulation with V-SLIM sensors for continuous insulation resistance monitoring throughout the off-station period.

Originally specified for 30 days, the deployment requirement was extended to 60 days plus contingency. The system ultimately remained in operation for 174 days, including a cyclone event and controlled battery recharging.

The result was continuous visibility of subsea electrical condition throughout the extended off-station period, helping reduce uncertainty ahead of restart.

That’s intelligence, installed where it matters.

The Challenge: Maintaining Visibility of Subsea Electrical Condition During Shutdown

FPSO off-station periods, including planned dry-docking and maintenance activities, introduce a critical phase in the lifecycle of subsea production systems.

While the FPSO is offline, subsea infrastructure remains exposed to potential electrical degradation. Without continuous insulation resistance monitoring, changes in electrical condition can go undetected until recommissioning.

In this case, the operator initially required monitoring across eight subsea control channels for 30 days. As the off-station period evolved, the requirement was extended to 60 days plus contingency, significantly increasing the demands placed on the autonomous monitoring system.

The solution also needed to meet strict operational constraints:

  • Compliance with IECEx Zone 2 hazardous-area requirements
  • Integration with existing offshore infrastructure
  • Reliable operation in high humidity and variable temperatures
  • Deployment within a constrained shutdown window
  • Alignment with a fixed FPSO dry-dock schedule

The objective was clear: maintain continuous, traceable visibility of subsea electrical condition throughout the off-station period, supporting confident recommissioning and return to production.

The Viper Solution: V-LIFE Protection and V-SLIM Monitoring

Viper delivered a fully autonomous, battery-powered system combining V-LIFE passivation technology for cable insulation protection with V-SLIM technology for continuous insulation resistance monitoring.

V-LIFE provided passivation-based cable insulation protection, helping mitigate degradation associated with water ingress and water treeing. V-SLIM complemented this protection with continuous insulation resistance monitoring, providing visibility of subsea electrical condition throughout the campaign.

The system provided continuous visibility of subsea umbilical condition across eight control channels throughout the FPSO off-station period.

Its architecture incorporated modular battery skids, a centralised battery management system and multiple V-SLIM Eurocard PCB assemblies housed within IECEx-certified enclosures suitable for the offshore hazardous-area environment.

To support installation within the constrained shutdown window, connectorised interfaces were designed to simplify installation and integration with offshore infrastructure.

Installed on the riser tower module, the architecture separated charging infrastructure from the operational monitoring equipment, supporting safe access and maintainability.

The solution was engineered for offshore environmental conditions, including humidity and temperature variation typical of North-West Australian operations.

Close collaboration between Viper’s engineering teams, power systems specialists and the operator ensured alignment across design, certification and offshore deployment.

As the off-station period extended beyond the revised 60-day requirement and contingency allowance, the system was recharged under controlled conditions, enabling monitoring to continue for the full deployment period.

By combining V-LIFE protection with V-SLIM monitoring, the solution provided the operator with a clear, traceable view of subsea electrical condition throughout the extended off-station period.

The Result: 174 Days of Subsea Electrical Protection and Monitoring Across Eight Channels

What began as a 30-day requirement ultimately became a 174-day deployment — nearly 6 times the original duration.

Throughout the deployment, V-LIFE provided passivation-based protection against cable insulation degradation associated with water ingress and water treeing, while V-SLIM continuously monitored insulation resistance across all eight control channels.

Together, the technologies combined active insulation protection with continuous visibility of subsea electrical condition, helping reduce uncertainty ahead of recommissioning.

As a result, the operator achieved:

  • 174 days of autonomous subsea electrical cable protection and monitoring
  • Eight control channels covered by continuous insulation resistance monitoring and cable insulation protection
  • 5.8× the original 30-day battery-operation requirement, with extended operation enabled through controlled battery recharging
  • Continuous visibility of subsea electrical condition throughout the off-station period
  • Reduced uncertainty ahead of recommissioning and system restart
  • Greater confidence in subsea system condition following dry-dock activities

Despite a constrained delivery schedule, the system was successfully designed, tested and deployed through coordinated engineering and offshore execution.

Following cut-over to the FPSO V-LIM systems, 46 hours of runtime data were reviewed and confirmed positive performance, after which V-LIFE data-log reporting returned to established support procedures.

After deployment, the batteries were restored to full capacity and placed on extended charge, leaving the system available for potential future use during the asset’s remaining field life.

By maintaining a clear, traceable view of subsea electrical condition throughout the extended off-station period, the solution helped the operator reduce uncertainty and approach recommissioning with greater confidence.

Intelligence Installed in Action

Extended FPSO off-station periods create additional demands on subsea electrical integrity management. Maintaining visibility of electrical condition helps operators understand the state of their systems before recommissioning.

By combining V-LIFE passivation protection with V-SLIM monitoring, Viper delivered an autonomous solution that continued operating for 174 days across eight subsea control channels — well beyond the original 30-day requirement.

It’s a practical example of how intelligent electrical protection and monitoring can help reduce uncertainty during extended offshore shutdowns.
