Managing Electrical Risk Across the FPSO Lifecycle

FPSOs present a different electrical risk profile to fixed offshore platforms, where power systems remain permanently connected and largely static. In FPSO operations, electrical systems must remain reliable not only during continuous production, but also through disconnect, wet-parking, and reconnection cycles.

During production, FPSO umbilicals and power cables are exposed to the same risks as fixed installations, including insulation degradation, water ingress, and ageing under load. These risks are amplified by dynamic vessel motion, turret interfaces, and repeated mechanical and electrical stresses.

Wet-park or wet-lay solutions

When an FPSO disconnects for wet-parking, cables may be laid on the seabed, routed through turret systems, or left suspended from the vessel.
