Our Technologies.

Innovation at our core.

Viper Innovations Ltd, founded in 2007 by Directors Max Nodder and Neil Douglas; was initially set up as an Engineering Consultancy, offering design and project management services for subsea distribution equipment. Over the years the business has invested heavily in Research & Development (R&D), resulting in a strong pipeline of product and services generating revenue growth derived from the business’ own intellectual property.

The combination of expert knowledge and R&D in collaboration with Universities has led to the design and development of a range of specialist subsea products and services. In more recent years some of these proven technologies have been transferred from the Subsea Industry to the Rail and other industrial sectors (feeding back new learnings into subsea), expanding the product offering.

The company continues to grow year on year by maintaining focus on our established markets and customers, by increasing exports to global markets and by continuously investing in our people and our technological innovations.

Designed for Reliability (DFR)

Reliability, Availability and Maintainability are critical considerations when designing products for the harsh and complex environments across the sectors we operate in, this is particularly important for the Subsea Oil and Gas and Railway sectors.

Our extensive experience means we understand the product development process and the reasons why a disciplined and rigorous approach is required for high reliability applications. The processes that we develop are used every day, are regularly audited to ensure relevancy and adherence, and a process of continuous improvement is employed to introduce improvements and learnings. Viper’s level of understanding combined with their meticulous processes and continuous improvement ensures that DFR is in their ‘DNA’.

Technology transfer to new sectors:

Since 2007, Viper has grown considerably having built a multi-disciplined and highly skilled team of people, along with a comprehensive set of robust procedures to govern day-to-day activities. During this time, we recognised that technologies developed for subsea applications provide opportunities to help in other industries with similar challenges.

Viper, therefore, embarked on a significant cross-industry technology transfer to develop CableGuardian – a new and highly innovative cable monitoring system for the Rail industry. Our confidence in making this business decision was based on the knowledge gained from our extensive experience in the Oil & Gas industry as well as the robust methods and procedures we had put in place.

Combined experience of 300+ years:

The foundations of Viper’s Engineering philosophies, methods and procedures are based on 300+ combined years of experience developing high reliability products and solutions in hugely challenging industries, such as military avionics, subsea Oil & Gas and the Rail industry, amongst others.

Our products are designed or adapted to meet the specific requirements of an industry, rather than using an existing product which isn’t right for the application and having to settle for a compromised solution. Subsequent learnings and improvements from cross-industry technology transfers are fed back into our design practices to provide mutual benefits and improvements.

Designed for Reliability:

Every day, our products and solutions are employed in difficult and/or expensive to reach locations. So our design practices have been developed to ensure reliability is at the core of the process (the DNA) in order to provide our customers with the peace of mind that they expect.

The idea of designing a product as a commercial ‘low cost’ compromise does not even register in our fundamental design principles as this is a proven false economy when things go wrong in the environments that we operate in.

Viper engineering practices are geared to ensure maximum Design For Reliability (DFR) through a combination of:

  • Extensive experience of a highly skilled team
  • Design reviews, checklists, FMECAs as well as various technical and environmental Risk Assessments form a standard part of our engineering design process
  • Controlled component specification, quality and derating
  • Rigorous Quality Assurance processes at all levels of design, manufacture and test.

Rigorous Product Testing:

Testing and verification are a fundamental part of a product development process and the most rigorous examples of these are seen as a basic expectation of industries demanding highly reliable products.

Engineers within Viper’s team have had involvement in the creation of various industry standards and have helped to specify requirements for these test regimes. This participation and knowledge gained has, in turn, informed Viper’s own processes.

Qualification testing of first-off production ready units forms the basis of Viper’s product design verification against the most demanding industry standards. Viper’s cross-industry knowledge and experience allows best practices and testing regimes to be taken from each industry in order to ensure our products are tested above and beyond the requirements. This includes Highly Accelerated Life Testing (HALT) and Accelerated Life Testing (ALT) programmes, as appropriate, to demonstrate an extra level of design margin for that added peace of mind.In addition, Environmental Stress Screening (ESS) programmes are used to test deliverable products for the most demanding industry applications and mission profiles, such as those used in the subsea Oil & Gas industry.
