V-LIFE is a preventative and active ‘healing’ solution designed to combat low insulation resistance (IR) in subsea cables, typically caused by water ingress. This is the most common cause of subsea electrical failures, leading to short circuits, leakage to earth, and the potential loss of power or communications, often resulting in halted production.

Left unaddressed, prolonged low IR can also lead to copper loss at the fault site, permanently damaging the conductor and rendering the system inoperable. Prior to V-LIFE, the only options were costly subsea fault-finding, cable recovery, and equipment replacement.

V-LIFE: Extending the life of subsea systems.

Insulation resistance restored — no subsea intervention required

V-LIFE prevents and recovers faults on subsea system cables. The V-LIFE effect is achieved by applying a low-voltage passivation signal to the faulty line. This triggers an electro-kinetic and electrochemical process that generates an electrically insulating precipitate precisely at the points where seawater has entered the subsea circuit. This insulation buildup significantly increases the circuit’s insulation resistance, often by more than 100x.

V-LIFE is enabled through the V-LIM insulation monitoring hardware and a simple software configuration upload. Installation is completed topside, no subsea intervention required and can typically be done in just 2–3 offshore shifts.

The service also includes condition reports, IR trend analysis, and engineering recommendations. V-LIFE is used on systems from six OEMs and is trusted by over 40 operators worldwide as the leading alternative to costly subsea intervention.
